Do Keurig K cups contain BPA

I would like to start this article with a disclaimer, we are not nor do we pretend to be doctor's or scientist in any way shape or form.  However, many people are asking- does the plastic used to make Keurig K-cups contain BPA?  We have been remiss to answer this question because it can cause controversy among those that have strong beliefs regarding plastics.  Those beliefs are yours to have and you are certainly entitled to them.  We are simply answering this one question, not addressing the plastics industy as a whole.

We will now return to our regularly scheduled program.

First of all, what is BPA?  BPA stands for Bisphenol-A.  Bisphenol-A is a synthetic compound used to make certain plastics- usually of the hard, clear variety as well as coat food and beverage cans.

BPA has been used for many years but, has recently been re-examined by the FDA for its hormone like properties.  There is strong concern about the suitability of BPA in consumer products as it has been linked to obesity, neurological issues, thyroid disorder and cancer.  For this reason most companies that package any sort of food items have abandoned the use of these products and switched to a safer plastic source.  In addition, the FDA no longer authorizes the use of BPA in baby bottles or sippy cups.

BPA is a particular issue when exposed to heat for prolonged periods of time.  Hence, the specific concern with our beloved single serve coffee.  We are happy to report that the plastic used to make Keurig K-cups does not contain Bisphenol- A, nor does the water reservoir or internal water pipelines of the brewer.  Thankfully, we can continue to happily brew our K-cup coffee without this health concern.
