I am continuing my Brew Over Ice kick with a modern day classic - Lemonade K-cups. Lets just say this isn't grannys homemade lemonade. We are a very busy generations, there is no time to squeeze dozens of lemons, we still want that old school refreshing lemon taste, we just want it now and with minimal effort. Lemonade K-cups gives us just that.
But, how does it work?
Lemonade K-cups contain a special combination of all natural ingredients designed to be brewed with a Keurig. The hot water of the unit releases the flavors of the dried fruits and sweetners producing a consistent glass of lemonade each and every time.
Speaking of ingredients, I was curious (as always) to see just what these things are made out of. I was quite pleased to see that there are no artificial flavors or colors, just very simple all natural fruit flavors and sweetners:
Ingredients: Sugar, Lemon Juice Powder (Citric Acid, Sugar, Lemon Oil, Lemon Juice Solids, Ascorbic Acid), Citric Acid, Reb A (Stevia Extract), Natural Flavor, Lemon Peel Powder, Lemon Fruit Powder.
There are 80 calories per Lemonade K-cup and they are packed with vitamin C! But, how does it taste?
As with all Brew Over Ice K-cups, I prepared my Lemonade using the lowest water setting of my Keurig. I brewed into a 16 oz plastic cup filled with ice. That was the perfect amount of water to fill it just below the rim. I allowed the ice to melt for a few minutes to cool the drink completely before taking my first sip.
My first taste was tart, sweet and packed with flavor! I expected it to be watered down but, that simply was not the case. As a matter of fact, if I could fit a bigger cup, I would use the middle water setting next time. The lemon flavor is pleasant and most importantly lacked any fake taste. Although tartness was present, it was not overwhelming nor was it a turn off. It provided that perfect combination of sour and sweet.
I have two suggestion when using Lemonade K-cups. First, shake them before you brew to loosen up the ingredients. Second, run a water only brew cycle through your Keurig after each lemonade you prepare. I had a cup of coffee immediately after my lemonade K-cup and I could taste it in my coffee. A water only cleanse will take care of that next time!
This is a refreshing treat that I plan to enjoy again. I may even doctor it up a little and add a splash of cranberry juice for a quick pink lemonade!
