Terminology:
  • Brew size/ cup size: the amount of water the unit will dispense during the coffee making process.
  • K-Cup®/pod: the coffee contained in a single serve capsule
  • Brewer/ unit: the Keurig® machine
  • Spring water: water derived from a natural spring generally sold in bottle format
  • Filtered water: tap water that has been run through a carbon filtration process to remove heavy minerals and impurities.
  • Box size: the number of K-Cup® pods in a box

Brew your way

At the heart of Keurig® brewing lies personalization. Keurig® machines come with adjustable features to get each morning just right (mid-morning, afternoon, and evening too)! There are two settings that you should adjust right away: temperature and cup size. I like my coffee piping hot, and in a large mug. You might prefer a few degrees cooler and a little smaller.

☕️ Note: when we refer to cup size keep in mind that the more water you use, the weaker the coffee will taste and vice versa.

Don’t worry; it is pretty easy to do. We have written step by step instructions in this article which goes over adjusting the temperature and cup size. You can also refer to your owners manual.

Choosing the right coffee

The second principle that Keurig® has adopted is choice. With hundreds of K-Cup® pods available, they have achieved this goal. But, all these choices can be overwhelming for users and leave us with a case of FOMO (fear of missing out)! Or worse, stuck with unused boxes of coffees that we hate. Our best advice is to seek recommendations. Following trends of popular roasts can help such as this article announcing the top-selling K-Cup® pods of 2018, based on actual customer data collected for an entire year.

Taster reviews can give you a deep dive into a particular roast. Let someone else try it first, tell you what it tastes like and see if it aligns with your preferences. You can find reviews all over the internet, and we host our own series here.

Finally, variety packs help. Keurig® has put together an entertainers pack and other themed options. As beginners, it is best to start with the basics. There are seven core K-Cup® pods that make a well-rounded supply. With these seven you will please every coffee drinker profile. Our suggested collection of K-Cup® coffees is detailed in this article.

☕️ You can brew your own ground coffee with most Keurig® units. You will need an adapter called the My K-Cup, check out this FAQ article for more details

Water

There are only two ingredients in a cup of joe. Now that we have the coffee part covered let’s talk about H2O. Water is an often ignored topic in brewing. It should not be, especially with Keurig® technology. The sensors and internal parts of your coffee machine are dependent on the mineral content of the water you use. Tap is often too heavy, and distilled water is entirely void of minerals.Your brewer operates best with filtered water which contains a moderate level. If you would like to read more about why filtered water is the best choice for your unit, check out this article, “What type of Water Should I use in my Keurig® Brewer?”.

The filtered water from your fridge is a perfect choice. If you do not have one, consider using one of these carbon filter kits designed to sit in the water reservoir of your coffee maker.

Troubleshooting

Let’s face it, Keurig® brewers are more complicated than an old school drip machine. You should be prepared by knowing how to properly handle hiccups and various messages on the digital display. They are all easy to resolve in a few short minutes. The following are articles that discuss the most common issues and how to handle them quickly and easily:

Another useful resource is this database of “how to” videos on the Keurig® website. If your issue goes beyond simple troubleshooting or you have tried all of these options, keep in mind that your brewer comes with a one year warranty. You can review the stipulations in this article, Does my Keurig® come with a Warranty”, the quick answer is–yes it does, and it is a good one.

☕️ The warranty is traced by the serial number and is activated the day your purchase date. It is not a bad idea to complete the registration process (found here) to make sure you are completely covered.

Maintenance

To keep your coffee maker functioning well and to assure the longevity of the unit you should perform a descaling on a regular schedule. Descaling is a fancy way to say clean. Our directions, “How to Clean a Keurig® 2.0” are universal and can be applied to almost any (Rivo, Vue, and My Cafe are the exceptions). Cleaning one of the mini models varies slightly, read this article if you are a mini owner.

Aside from the coffee maker, your K-Cup® pods should be stored in a cool, dark cupboard and used within a certain time period (“What is the Shelf life of a K-Cup® pod?”).

This is where your deal seeking abilities will come in handy. There are plenty of ways to save money on your K-Cup® coffee pods including:

Congratulations, you are well on your way to becoming a master Keurig® K-Cup® coffee user. With the knowledge and resources you now have, your personalized coffee experience will be full of choice. Plus, you will know what do in any given troubleshooting situation, keep your brewer healthy and have a little fun while saving money!
