I have had a few weeks to taste test all of our new Starbucks Kcup coffees (it's a tough job but, somebody has got to do it!), and man oh man have I enjoyed it. I honestly had no idea I would be so thrilled with this line of coffee pods. My morning cup has been so much more satisfying and I never thought that was possible.

To be quite candid, Starbucks has never been my first choice of coffee shops. When I go there I tend to gravitate toward lattes and flat whites avoiding the regular coffee roasts. But, I think I was simply not giving it a chance because their coffee has always had a reputation of tasting burnt and overdone. But, there is so much more to it.

I decided to go for the gusto and review French Roast first, go big or go home, right?

I chose to brew my Starbucks French Roast Kcup coffee on the highest water setting of my Keurig can imagine why. French Roast is one of the darkest bean options available. Top that off with Starbucks as the roaster and you have one heck of a dark cup of coffee. I knew darn well a little extra water would be a good thing with this Kcup and I didn't even dare think about pushing the "strong" button on my Keurig 2.0!

The result was as I expected, a pitch-black cup of joe with absolutely no translucency. The first sip smacks you in the face RIGHT AWAY! Immediately the front end of my pallet experienced a strong but sweet earthy and citrus taste. Yes, there were hints of burnt marshmallow but much to my surprise it was quite enjoyable. Although super dark, the body is light and buoyant making French Roast fairly easy to drink. The cool part was, the same tastes hit me again on the back end giving this coffee an awesome 1,2 punch. The flavor was nothing less than delicious and lingered on the tongue for quite some time.

I am a cream lover so I chose to add a generous portion. This addition changed the experience dramatically! The mouthfeel became velvety and a chocolate taste appeared. The body of course became slightly heavier making this Kcup that much more enjoyable.

All in all, I was completely shocked by how much I was able to not just tolerate but actually enjoy Starbucks French Roast. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend this Kcup to all dark roast coffee drinkers. Medium roast fans, ready to venture to the dark side, go for it. Light and flavored coffee lovers, this is not the Kcup for you (try Veranda instead).
