Mahogany is a dark roast K-cup coffee brought to us by none other than Caribou. You may be more familiar with Caribou as a coffee house and great one at that. Caribou jumped on the Keurig K-cup wagon early on, granting us the convenience of brewing the same coffee they serve in their stores without leaving our homes.
Mahogany is a blend of coffee beans from Sumatra, Guatamela and El Salvador and we are happy to report that this is a Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee.
I knew going in to this taste testing that this would be a very dark coffee based on the name alone therefore, I chose to brew my Caribou Mahogany K-cup on the highest water setting of my Keurig. The appearance was absolutely pitch black with no translucency what so ever.
The first sip was an immediate acidic taste followed by incredibly intense smokiness. There are hints of woodsiness but the overpowering flavor is smoke. Other reviews claim to taste a sweet chocalate in this coffee, perhaps my taste buds differ but, I did not detect that charachterisitic.
This is a very tried and true rugged, dark roast coffee. If you are a fan of Starbucks or any of the extremely dark, burnt tasting coffees (there are a lot of you out there!) then this is the perfect K-cup coffee for you. That is the one and only group that I would recommend Mahogany to. I think this taste is too unique to appeal to the masses and the general pallet.
This is a great choice for a nice full mug of coffee since it clearly can stand up to the extra water withou coming anywhere near tasting watered down.
Have you tried Mahogany? How would you describe the taste?
